The Best Way to Learn is to Teach

Looking for a way to improve your return on your study time? One of the most effective ways to learn something on your course is to teach it to others. You can do it informally by helping your colleagues or arranging a study group, or formally by offering your services as a tutor. Whichever you choose you’ll be the one to benefit most!

Consider:

  • If you can explain it to others, then you know you have it well prepared. You can face the exam with confidence, a confidence you won’t get from many other study techniques. You will have been tested already, and passed!
  • You will find your understanding deepens when you have to explain to someone else. Teaching a topic always involves knowing that bit more than what you actually need to pass on. You always need a bit more background information to teach successfully. So you will be forced to increase your knowledge of your topic to a standard more than adequate for your exam.
  • From a simple time management point of view, arranging to explain to someone else at a set time, what you have decided to share, will keep the pressure on. Working alone as you so often do when studying makes discipline and meeting deadlines difficult. It’s very easy for time to slip by as you all know, without much progress. If you know you’ll have to present the information the next day, you will be far more focussed than you would be if you were studying on your own.
  • You don’t have to be an expert, you need only stay one step ahead of your colleagues, so it’s not as difficult as it may seem. Even offering to help a friend through a course, while you study it the day before, will improve your grades immensely, not to mention the satisfaction you will feel from helping someone else get to grips with a subject they thought they couldn’t manage.
  • If you are helping a younger student, through grinds or tutoring, though the content may not be an immediate part of your own study, you will be consolidating the information you might have covered in previous years of your course, which will help you absorb and understand the higher level material you yourself have to cover. This is particularly true of mathematical or scientific studies. And maybe you can make some pocket money in the process!
  • Recalling what you’ve learned is essential for study. And there is no better way to recall than to explain it again to someone else.
  • If you all take turns leading a group, it’s a great way to share the workload. Although you will still be best prepared in the topics you yourself present, if you are in hurry, you will at least cover a lot of your course in a short time.
  • There is tremendous satisfaction in seeing the light bulb go on in someone else’s face as they understand a concept you are trying to explain. Who knows, you may get the teaching bug and follow it as a career!
  • If you get a reputation as someone who’s good at explaining or who’s good to approach about questions, you will find more and more people will ask you, which in turn will push you to higher and higher levels. The informal social support structure that grows from this too will greatly increase your enjoyment of college or school.

Whether you have an opportunity to become a tutor, give grinds, lead your own study group, or just help out a friend you will find that having to explain your course material to other people will increase your own understanding immensely. It can’t be beaten as a way to further your studies! Try it today – you won’t regret it.

How Is a Planner Like a Radar?

Middle school students often resist using a planner or an agenda. Think about it from their point of view: they have to stop what they’re doing, pull it out of their backpack, find the right page, have a pen or pencil in hand, and write stuff (hopefully, legibly) into a small space. All that, when they don’t even think they need a planner, because they’re convinced they can remember everything!

As a teacher, I try to get kids to think of their planner as a radar screen. Assignments, appointments, tests, projects, quizzes and sports practices are missiles, rockets and aircraft that have entered their airspace. Their planner is like a a radar screen that lets them track and manage it all – before disaster strikes! I also teach them that, by the time they reach middle school, their time management responsibilities are much greater than they realize! There are actually three schedules they need to track in their planners:

1. The Annual Calendar

Their school’s Annual Calendar contains important school-wide dates and events, such as exam weeks, holidays, bell schedule changes, games, rallies, special celebrations, etc. Students should know where they can find the Annual Calendar (it’s usually on the school website) and periodically review the activities and events. Some will impact them (e.g. Picture Day) and some won’t (e.g. PTA meeting). Record dates and events that affect them in their planners.

2. Class Schedules or Calendar

A Class Schedule or Calendar contains assignments, due dates and events for a single class, such as science or math. It shows homework assignments, project due dates, field trips, quizzes, etc. This calendar may be distributed in class as a handout, or maintained on a teacher’s web page. Information from the Class Schedule or Calendar should be copied into their planner, one to two weeks at a time and updated daily. If there is no homework for a class on a given night, students should make a habit of writing “N/H”for “No Homework” in the correct planner date. Because a student will have six or more class schedules, there’s a lot to keep track of.

3. Personal Schedules

By the time a student reaches middle school, he or she should assume some responsibility their personal schedule. Events and appointments,such as doctor’s, dentist and orthodontist’s appointments, club or tutoring meetings, sports practices, games, special occasions, vacations, religious holidays and birthdays make up a student’s personal schedule. Knowing their personal schedule helps students manage their time. Also, a student’s personal schedule often impacts another person’s schedule. Parents need to know about changes in practice times, or a carpool driver needs to know when a student will be absent from carpool due to an appointment,etc. Teachers need to know if a student will be absent from class for an appointment.

Copying so much information (annual, class and personal schedules) into a planner is tedious. But, by tracking all three schedules in their planners, students can get the “big picture” or the “radar view” of their responsibilities. That is the key to successfully managing their time!

College is an exciting time! It is a time when children stop being children and fully grow into young adults, complete with taking on responsibilities of their own. Of course, few college students are completely ready to be adults right away, and many often find that they need a little help navigating adult life and staying as safe as possible while they do so. Here, we are providing a few tips for staying out of danger while living the college lifestyle. Use the Buddy System

When elementary school students take field trips, they are often told to “find a buddy” and to stick with that person at all times throughout the day. While this rule might seem a bit childish, it still works quite well in all social situations, during college years and even adulthood. Students who are planning on going to a party, on a late night walk to the library, or anywhere unfamiliar are encouraged to go along with someone else and stay by them. Not only is it more fun to do things with someone else and provide an opportunity to get to know someone new or spend time with a friend, but this also provides two (or more) pairs of watchful eyes decreasing the chances of having something go awry.

Avoid Walking Alone at Night

Once students become comfortable on campus, it can start to feel to them like it is the safest place in the world. They shouldn’t fall into the false sense of security, however, as crimes can and have taken place on college campuses. If students have to walk to their car, to the library, or anywhere else after dark-even if it’s somewhere on campus or close by-they should find someone who can walk with them! Psychological Tips for Effective Studying

STUDY STRATEGIES

* Revise regularly- Revision should be continuous if you are to gain a deep understanding of the subject. It should not be superficial and rushed. Cramming might help you remember a few facts but it will not give you the overall understanding of a subject, which you should be studying for in your University Education.

* Be systematic- You should begin organizing a study schedule as soon as possible in the start of the semester

* Use varied techniques- besides making summaries of your lecture notes, use varying strategies for your revision. Draw up schemes showing the relationship between the concepts you have studied in your subjects or form study groups with your fellow students to discuss the different topics and the relationships between them to reinforce both understanding and recall.

* Use relationship to memorize- Understanding the relationships between pieces of information, such as their similarities and differences, and using their relationship to information already known is a definite advantage during stress of an examination.

* Practice previous exam papers- You should obtain copies of previous exam papers as early as possible in the revision process. Doing these exams in the required time limit will give you practice in applying what you have learnt to specific topics and practice in examination techniques. This will also give you a good idea of the format, time limit and the number of questions in the examination.

* Attend lectures- Pay attention in lectures and tutorials and so on for information relevant to exams. For example what topic might be expected in a test etc?

Stress the following areas in your revision:

o Points emphasized in class or in the text

o Areas the Professor has advised for study

o Questions in study guides, past questions and reviews at the end of textbook chapters.

STUDY HABITS

* Decide what to study (choose a reasonable task) and how long or how many chapters, pages, problems, etc. Set and stick to deadline.

* Do difficult tasks first. For procrastination, start with an easy interesting aspect of the project.

* Have special places to study. Take into consideration, lighting, temperature, and availability of materials.

* Study 50 minutes and then take a 10 minutes break. Stretch, relax, have energy snack.

* If you get tired or bored, switch task/activity. Stop studying when you are no longer being productive.

* Do rough memory tasks and review, especially detail, just before you fall asleep.

* Study with a friend. Quiz each other compare notes and predicted test questions.

STUDY SKILLS

o Physical environment- Choose situations, which make you feel comfortable, for example a particular space in the library, in your own home or study room in halls of residence.

o Plan a time table- Use a time schedule to prioritise study times and try to stick to your schedule.

o Mental activity- Remember that your concentration span is limited. So do not sit for 3-4 hours at a time starting at one page of notes. Wait for an hour or so reading and making extra notes. Draft out or use real exam questions from past papers and consider how little you know and understand

o Stop to take a break- Have a coffee or short walk and mentally review what you have achieved. Return to your studies.

o You will find that the process of activity and review will be useful and will help you to set a pattern of study.

o Quality of study- Remember that it is not time itself spent on studying which matters, it is the quality of the exercise of studying. Develop an understanding of the material you are working on. Information simply committed to memory will rarely see you safely through your exams.

o Choice of material- Don’t shy away from material which you find most difficult to understand because if you do it will be precisely this material which will be problematic for you in the exam. Take this material first.

o Problems- If there are sections of the syllabus, which you cannot understand, try to find the appropriate lecturer to help you. But try not to leave this until the day before the exam. Ask someone on the same course as you. If these strategies don’t work for you try using a variety of different textbooks, some authors explain difficult concepts better than others.

CONCENTRATION

Concentration is the ability to direct one’s thinking in whatever direction one would
intend. We all have the ability to concentrate sometimes.

Think of the time when you were engrossed in super novel or in a cinema -Total
concentration. But at other times your thoughts are scattered and you mind races from
one thing to another. Learn and practice concentration strategies.

REVISION

Revision is a process of looking over past work as preparation for examination. It is an activity which can produce good results and reduce ‘exam nerves’ if it is carefully planned and carried out in a systematic way. Black coffee and sleepless nights just before your exams rarely allow you to do justice to your talents.

Towards end of a course, a review of your completed written work and of past examination papers will often indicate the existence of close links between exam questions and essays, assignments and project work. On this basis, you select your own best work and use it for revision. Work, which has been less successful, should contain advice from a tutor and this can be followed up.

What revisions can do for you:

* Extends your ability to assess your own knowledge and understanding.

* Provides an opportunity to analyze this in relation to the requirements of the examination.

* Enable you to pass examination and gain recognition for your talents.

GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESSFUL REVISION

* Make sure you know well in advance the topics to be covered in the particular exam.

* Keep copies of all course documents, projects, essay questions, title of assignments and reading list on file.

* Make this the basis of your revision. Resist the temptation to try to start your course all over again from the beginning.

* Review your own the assessed work, making a selection of that with the best grade.

* Compare your own work with the question asked as past question papers.

* At this stage it is vital that you will have enough material to answer all the likely questions.

* If you decide on to expand what you have already got, look at less successful papers and see if you can improve them by careful editing, filling in gaps, correcting errors of fact or understanding.

* Reduce each piece of work to note form.

TIME MANAGEMENT

Avoid overload.
Organize your hours to include ample time for rest, relaxation, sleep, eating, exercising and socializing.
Break the study time into manageable amounts of time to avoid boredom and loss of concentration. Sessions lasting 20-30 minutes are the best Studying for six half hour sessions is much more effective than studying for 3 straight hours.

Don’t put everything off until the last minute.

PRACTICE EFFECTIVE STUDY TECHNIQUES

Know how to rearrange your schedule when necessary (so that it doesn’t manage you, but you manage it).

Why are you doing the task? Is it important for your long-term goals?
Have and follow a personal mission statement (personal and career) Are your activities ultimately helping you to achieve your goals.

With many habits, the sooner you start practicing and developing good habits, the better chance you will have that you will continue with them. We all know that good study habits are essential to educational success. Good study habits are an important part of any student’s success. We probably can diminish the academic dishonesty by promoting good study habits with students, and letting the students know that good study habits are very important when it comes to school. Still, even procrastination can be overcome with proper study habits, and improving your study habits is the key to better studying. Good study habits are a great tool to have in the toolbox of life.

Many of the tips for success for online students are the same as those for students in an onsite classroom. Consider asking your school’s student council to take on a study tips project. Following a few simple study tips can help students effectively learn new concepts and theories. There have been numerous published tips students can use as a guide for good study habits.

A good way to stay organized is to use folders so you child can keep his/her assignments until needed and it is a great way of staying organized. Once children reach the grades where homework and tests are part of the curriculum, there are many things parents can do to encourage good study habits. An effective way to study is to study before and while you do the homework. A little amount of homework may help elementary school students build study habits. Being organized and having homework routines are the most important things in helping your child develop good study habits for life.

All learning, however, is a process which settles into certain steps. Students with learning problems, however, may still have generally inefficient and ineffective study habits and skills. Becoming aware of your learning style will help you to understand why you sometimes get frustrated with common study methods.

Effective study habits are a very import part of the learning process. Good study habits are all about keeping to a daily routine and giving all subjects equal treatment. If your study habits are weak, take a “study skills” course or have someone show you good study habits. The problem is that those high school study habits are hard to shake. Hard work and good study habits are assets that should be nurtured. Motivation and study habits are obviously crucial as well. Good habits are important for all students to protect investments of time and money and to achieve educational goals. After that experience your study habits are permanently altered, this will help your own preparation as you start teaching and last a lifetime. Study Tips – How to Study for High School Finals

Some of the most common questions involving studying concern finals, and rightfully so. For many high school students, their finals determine their success or failure in a class. That one test can be 50% of a student’s grade for an entire semester of work. Here are four steps that will help you make sure that you are getting the most out of your study sessions for high school finals.

1. Make sure you have all of your materials.

Few things are more annoying than having to continually re-gather your school materials. Make sure you have all the books and other materials you need for that class. Frankly, though, your books should simply be a reference by this time. You have been taking good notes and studying all along, so your most important materials aren’t in your books. It’s in your own words on your own paper.

You also want to make sure you have enough materials to stay put for at least 50 minutes. A writing utensil, paper on which to make new review materials, and a focused mind should be enough. If you would rather make a digital resource than a hand-written one, that will work. But before committing to a computer, consider these three benefits of hand-writing your review materials.

First, you have the added memory aid of kinesthetic learning. This is a primary way people take in information, and, believe it or not, simply writing something down can be tremendously helpful for memorization. Second, there are visual helps that come from hand-writing a new review sheet that are missed on a computer screen. For example, many people have had the experience of remembering where an answer was on a particular page. If you’ve ever thought, “I remember that It was under the picture of the alligator on the top right hand corner of the page… ,” you know what I’m talking about. That benefit is mostly lost on a scrolling computer screen. Third, successful students know the benefits of arrows, diagrams, scribbles, doodles, and every other weird hand-written elements for studying. You miss that on Microsoft Word. There is no way around it with the current state of technology.

If you have all of your materials, you are now ready for step 2, setting the environment for a successful final exam study session.

2. Set up a great environment for studying.

Many college students miss this element entirely. Consider this: how many students have you seen at Starbucks with a laptop open, Facebook in the background, gmail chat in the foreground, twitter feeds buzzing their phones, text messages coming in every three minutes, and a chemistry book in their lap? That type of studying – if it can even be called “studying” – is not particularly helpful for studying for finals. High school students need to understand this element of studying for finals before graduating. Your environment matters. It can make or break your study session.

The problem with a bad environment is that time moves at the same speed whether you are learning or not. Many a disappointed student has spent hours at the coffee shop cramming for exams but failed a test because of a poor environment. Great environments enhance studying exponentially.

Great environments, while being different for each individual, will have certain things in common. Social media will be held at bay. As difficult as that sounds, it must be done. Tell Facebook, “Goodbye,” for an hour. Twitter, texting, Voxer, and HeyTell have no place in a finals study session. More traditional media like television also needs to be shut down for a while. Set an environment where you can concentrate without the constant pull of media all around you. Music can help some students stay focused, but try to make sure it is instrumental and playing quietly in the background if at all. The quieter and more focused your environment is, the more productive your study session will be.

3. Focus your studies on the most important ideas and details.

When studying for finals, you should not be re-reading the chapters. Reading is an important part of the learning process, but it is too comprehensive to be helpful on a final exam. You want just the biggest, most important details. Birthdays, maiden names, pets names, favorite colors, and state flowers are usually not on the final exams. Essays about major thought-movements and the key thinkers involved are on final exams.

Acing your finals is dependent on whether or not you can focus your learning on the most important ideas. If you can, you are sure to score higher in less time studying. If you cannot, you are sure to know a lot of information, have spent a lot of hours in the library, and not understand why so much of what you studied wasn’t on the exam. Learning what to learn is as important as learning how to learn.

4. Study.

Get to work on what you know. Go over the notes you’ve made, make a study guide for yourself, and do the work. I recommend 50 minutes of studying at a time. Break those sections up with a ten-minute break to get the most out of your session.

5. Stop studying, sleep and dominate the final test.

There comes a point in every study session where every student has to sleep. Sometimes students forget about this. They stay up late, drinking a lot of coffee, feeling miserable, and working for a long time. Then when the test comes, they are groggy and end up writing weird things.

Don’t write weird essays. Just go to sleep. It is one of the most important things you can do during the studying process.

One high school friend of mine drew a sailboat on an essay exam because he couldn’t gather his thoughts enough to write a great essay. In case you are curious, sailboats don’t score well on essay tests. And yes, that is a true story. You can’t make that up.

If you’ve done your work, you should be set up for a great performance on your final exams. Relax, know that you’ve done your best, and dominate the test.

Simple Time Management Tips to Make High School Life Easier

High school student not just study and take classes. They also have to join school activities, socialize and do their homework. Apparently, they always have a lot of work in school and at home.

It is essential for high school students to be organized. If you are a high school student, it may seem like you are always running out of time and all you do is study and never get enough time with your friends and family.

Listed here seven tips for you to follow to make life of high school students easier and add extra time for you to be with your friends and family:

1- Set the target everyday – Before you go to bed, list down all the matters you want to accomplish on the next day. A ‘to do” list will help you to know what you are going to do and avoid doing unimportant tasks, of which will get everything done more efficiently and faster.

2- Prioritize your list of target – Once the “to do” list completed, try to prioritize the goals you want to achieve. Set your most important goal in life on top of your priority and your least important goals to down below on the list.

Be realistic on your list. It is better to list on what you need to achieve and not on what you want to achieve. If you have a long-term priority, it is probably best that you put it on the bottom of your list; you can always work on that tomorrow.

3- Utilize your spare time – As a high school student, sometimes you may not notice you have lots of spare time. Try to add up the minutes of the school bus ride to school and the school bus ride back home.

Use these times to create strategy of how to finish your homework effectively. By doing this, you will get an idea on what you need to do on your homework when you get home. This allows you to finish your homework faster and have extra time for other things.

4- Finding the right time – Sometime, students have specific time to study more efficiently. For instance, you can solve your math problems well on the afternoons; then do not wait until nighttime to do it. Mood is important here since mood can shifts immediately.

5- Taking notes – An effective way to study is to write down important notes. It is proven much better than just plain reading. Writing down notes has an effect on your mind. You can understand the topic more effectively and memorize it more effectively than by just reading.

Review your notes as your teacher might give a pop quiz on the next day. Reviewing your notes will help you be more prepared for the pop quizzes that your teacher may suddenly give.

6- Get adequate sleep – It is unhealthy trying to stress yourself out studying when you are supposed to be sleeping. It can bring ineffective results and unwelcome health problems.

If you need to sleep you have to sleep, do not force yourself to study if you cannot effectively study. If you try to study in this situation, you will most likely waste your time.

7- Keep your goals realistic – Trying to accomplish unrealistic goals can often result in failure and frustration. Setting realistic goals that is difficult and achieving it can give you self-worth and be proud on your achievements.

Just remember, everything you need to accomplish in one day is possible if you are organized and plan everything you do in a day.
