Stress Management and Mastery: Relaxation Triggers

Did you know that you can create your own relaxation triggers?

How would you like to be able to fire off your own relaxation trigger whenever you needed it?

Here are 3 simple steps that will allow you to relax anywhere whenever you need it.

Step One

Picture yourself in a relaxing, peaceful, and stress free situation and place. For some people it is indoors, for others it is outdoors somewhere.

Create as much detail as you can in your imagination. Make it bright and colorful. Immerse yourself in the scene. See what you would see, hear what you would hear, feel what you would feel.

While you are picturing yourself in this peaceful and relaxing place, create an immediate trigger. This will enable you to instantly feel the relaxation when you need it.

Your trigger could be a snap of the fingers, a word or phrase, a mental picture, a song, or something else that works for you.

Whatever the trigger is, it should quickly and strongly remind you of the relaxing place.

Step Three

The nice thing about this exercise is I bet you will get to practice it very soon. We do not have to wait too long to face a stressful situation.

When you do find yourself in a stressful situation, simply fire off your relaxation trigger and feel the relief.

How Is a Planner Like a Radar?

Middle school students often resist using a planner or an agenda. Think about it from their point of view: they have to stop what they’re doing, pull it out of their backpack, find the right page, have a pen or pencil in hand, and write stuff (hopefully, legibly) into a small space. All that, when they don’t even think they need a planner, because they’re convinced they can remember everything!

As a teacher, I try to get kids to think of their planner as a radar screen. Assignments, appointments, tests, projects, quizzes and sports practices are missiles, rockets and aircraft that have entered their airspace. Their planner is like a a radar screen that lets them track and manage it all – before disaster strikes! I also teach them that, by the time they reach middle school, their time management responsibilities are much greater than they realize! There are actually three schedules they need to track in their planners:

1. The Annual Calendar

Their school’s Annual Calendar contains important school-wide dates and events, such as exam weeks, holidays, bell schedule changes, games, rallies, special celebrations, etc. Students should know where they can find the Annual Calendar (it’s usually on the school website) and periodically review the activities and events. Some will impact them (e.g. Picture Day) and some won’t (e.g. PTA meeting). Record dates and events that affect them in their planners.

2. Class Schedules or Calendar

A Class Schedule or Calendar contains assignments, due dates and events for a single class, such as science or math. It shows homework assignments, project due dates, field trips, quizzes, etc. This calendar may be distributed in class as a handout, or maintained on a teacher’s web page. Information from the Class Schedule or Calendar should be copied into their planner, one to two weeks at a time and updated daily. If there is no homework for a class on a given night, students should make a habit of writing “N/H”for “No Homework” in the correct planner date. Because a student will have six or more class schedules, there’s a lot to keep track of.

3. Personal Schedules

By the time a student reaches middle school, he or she should assume some responsibility their personal schedule. Events and appointments,such as doctor’s, dentist and orthodontist’s appointments, club or tutoring meetings, sports practices, games, special occasions, vacations, religious holidays and birthdays make up a student’s personal schedule. Knowing their personal schedule helps students manage their time. Also, a student’s personal schedule often impacts another person’s schedule. Parents need to know about changes in practice times, or a carpool driver needs to know when a student will be absent from carpool due to an appointment,etc. Teachers need to know if a student will be absent from class for an appointment.

Copying so much information (annual, class and personal schedules) into a planner is tedious. But, by tracking all three schedules in their planners, students can get the “big picture” or the “radar view” of their responsibilities. That is the key to successfully managing their time!

Speed Tufting Is Both An Art and a Science – Book Review

Many people are quilters, and it takes a long time to learn all the different kinds of stitches, and how to put together complex patterns. People make all kinds of things out of quilting material. Many people are quite accomplished artists in this medium. Still, making a really nice rug for the floor or for a wall can be much more difficult until you learn how to do it correctly. They’re all kinds of things you need to learn if you choose to take up this new sport. Let’s talk about that for a second shall we?

The reason I say this is because I own a very good book that talks about tufting, and the other day when I was going through my bookshelves determining which books I should donate to friends or to the local library I came across this book. I decided to take it with me to the local coffee shop and read through it. I’m very glad I did. It’s an extremely interesting book, and I’d like to recommend it to you as well. The name of the book is;

“The Art of Speed Tufting” by Joseph Montell, published by RC – Rug Crafters, Santa Ana, California, 1973, 63 pages.

In this book you will learn about all of the tools needed for speed tufting. You will learn how to use a tongue and steel shuttle, and a needle and wooden handle tool. You will learn why tufting weavers prefer spring brass tongues, and how to use the adjusting screw to get the tufting tool to walk. It is my belief that if you put in a good 20 hours of practice, you can learn to be a speed tufting artist. If you doubt that, perhaps you might also read the book “The First 20 Hours,” which suggests that you can learn a new skill quite easily if you put your mind to it and use the right methodology to learn.

Okay, back to the tufting book; in this book you will learn how to thread the tufting tool and why there is a bend in the tufting tongue and how to gauge and adjust the loop length as well as the distance between stitches. You will learn about the stretching pattern, preparing the yarn and how to use a yarn reeler. I had no idea about how to latex the back once you are completed, or why the hemming of the pattern and the hemming of a round rug were different.

This book takes you through creating custom patterns from start to finish. Lastly, the book tells you how to wash your creation without ruining it. Please consider all this and think on it – and perhaps, buy this book if you are interested.

Vedic Mathematics

Vedic Mathematics and Hindu culture are intertwined to an extant that separating the two would be tantamount to a sacrilege. The birth of Vedic Mathematics is lost in the womb of time. They are based upon the ancient Vedic literature or the Vedas. The exact date when the Vedas were written is not clear. Different dates are given by different authorities.

The revival of Vedic Mathematics is no less than a miracle. Extracting the theorems and corollaries from Vedic texts requires not only an understanding of the vedic scriptures but also a genuinely intelligent mind.

Jagadguru Swami Bharti Krisna Tirthahji Maharaj, Shankracharya of Sharda Peeth and Goverdham Math discovered 16 Vedic Sutras and 13 Upsutras in the Parishistha of Atharvved. This he achieved through rigorous tapas and transcendental meditation.

Through sheer intuition and scholarly pursuit he was able to decode them and get wide ranging mathematical principles and applications from them. He found that these Sutras covered all aspects of modern mathematics. He wrote extensively on the subject, but unfortunately he later discovered that none of his works had been preserved.

In his old age with his failing health and eyesight, he wrote from his memory an introductory account of the subject. He attained Mahasmadhi in 1960.

The latest research in Vedic mathematics suggests that there are sixteen Sutras which have been expanded upon by an additional thirteen sub-Sutras or corollaries. A brief discussion on each of these is in order.

Career Guidance Tips For Teachers

It may seem like a long time ago since you took up that one subject in Guidance and Counseling in college but waver not! There’s no need to take a refresher course for you to effectively guide your students towards the most rewarding career paths for them.

  1. Be an example of happiness and contentment. The only competition that can give financial rewards a run for its money is happiness. Remind your students everyday that career is not an issue of immediate monetary returns but of enduring returns. Seeing you smiling despite the stress of your work (and the delayed salary if you will) will inspire them to choose careers they will enjoy in the long run. It will also show them how, even if industry demands change, who they are and what gives them joy will remain rock-steady.
  2. Encourage self-reflection and self-discovery. With all the diversions and recreation students have, taking time off to think and reflect might be the last thing on their to-do list. You can help them by giving them a few minutes at homeroom to ponder on some questions like: “What do I like best about myself?” or “What do I want to do for the next five years?” If this seems too serious, use games like Icebreaker or Query.
  3. Let them express their plans and dreams. Many students, when asked what they want to do in life, just shrug and say, “I don’t know.” Perhaps they don’t, perhaps they do but haven’t really thought about it. Allowing them to express their dreams-no matter how far-out-promotes the value of thinking ahead and the skill of planning. Ask them to create an image of who they will be ten years from now and to write about what they have accomplished within ten years. This way, it will seem like they have already achieved what they desire.
  4. Commend a student’s strengths to him and to his peers. Giving praise where it is due certainly makes a difference. Notice the smallest victories in any field or aspect of life. Did someone submit an exceptional drawing or essay? Made friends with everyone? Fixed a broken chair? Receiving positive remarks about his/her output or attitude boosts self-esteem and encourages a student to pursue his/her best attributes. Making a student’s peers see your sign of approval makes them appreciate the person’s worth, creating a community where students are not forced to see academics as the only standard of worth.
  5. Introduce them to a variety of successful people. Provide them with role models of passion and good career choice, be it a college graduate or a high school dropout. It is common fare for students to meet college graduate bigwigs in their lessons. There are many of them after all as if to prove that college is the only way out of poverty. What is difficult is to convince people that college is not for everyone and is not the only option. If you namedrop successful celebrities and tycoons who didn’t go to college, they just might rethink the entire thing.
  6. Talk about a student’s best qualities and possible options to his/her parents. Hearing of their child’s passion and perseverance in something never fails to make parents proud of their children. Hearing of the best qualities of their child from a teacher enhances their understanding of their child and makes them more open to options other than theirs. Inform them of possibilities for their child and emphasize long-term rewards over immediate gains. For those students who are not apt for college education, dwell on the positive traits of the student so that parents will see the benefits of alternative options like technical-vocational careers.
  7. Organize a simple education and career directory. Because of the unavailability of organized information on education and career options, make a simple one for your homeroom class. You can put a simple list of college courses and technical-vocational specializations and their corresponding job or industry requirements. At the bottom of the list, include contact numbers for some colleges or universities and institutions that offer technical-vocational programs. You may also include local bureau or government agency hotlines.

Anger Management: What is Your Anger Language?

So what is your anger language?

Your anger language is which emotion typically triggers your anger.

Most people believe that their anger “just happens” in one of two ways:

Either they can’t help themselves or someone or something makes them angry.

The reality is…

The reality is you can help yourself and no one makes you angry, because anger is a choice.

The reason anger is a choice is because anger is a secondary emotion. In other words, before you feel anger, you have felt something else first.

Which one comes first?

There are three primary emotions or feelings that typically come before anger. The top three are:

1. Frustration – Something has not gone your way, gotten in your way, or frustrated you in some other way.

2. Fear – You have gotten scared by something or you are extremely worried about something.

3. Hurt – You got your feelings hurt.

A little practice

Here is what you can practice – the next time you get angry, pay attention to what you were feeling before you got angry. Was it frustration, fear, or hurt?

As you get good at identifying which feeling usually comes first for you, you will be able to identify this as your primary anger language.

Whatever your primary anger language is, deal with that emotion first and then the need for the anger diminishes or disappears.

You Can Also Study in New Zealand

New Zealand has now come up as a popular study destination for students. There are reasons behind it.
